First, an explanation on how Turnitin works with Canvas integration

Canvas integrates with outside services, such as Turnitin, by connecting with them via an LTI or API - basically a secured connection that allows them to talk to each other and exchange information.

Canvas does not change the specific service it is integrated with or dictate what it can or cannot do or what options or services are available. The service itself and the licensee control these attributes.

Integration is required in order to conform with FREPA and other regulations associated with student data and privacy.

Second, there are two ways to access and use Turnitin, one uses Canvas as a platform, the other connects to Turnitin as an external tool. Both work, each has different attributes:

You can enable Turnitin in the editing options while selecting the Online option under the submission type for an assignment. In this option, you can see the Originality Check and use GradeMark.

You can enable Turnitin in the editing options when selecting the External Tool option under the Submission type for an assignment. In this option, you can see the Originality Check, use GradeMark, PeerMark, Grade Anything, and the ETS® e-rater® technology.
