Using Recorded vs. in Class Speeches

* special thanks to Professor Gao in Communication Studies for sharing this material.

In class speeches are a standard of the public speaking experience. However, the classroom is a somewhat artificial environment and students may benefit from some "field" experience. An option is to have students record their speeches in front of "live audiences" and then post them to a Canvas discussion board for peer feedback.

Speeches can be graded online much like they are graded in a live classroom. The same videos that students upload to the discussion board can be graded using a custom rubric you can create in Canvas and use in Speedgrader. See the What Can I Do In Speedgrader? for details.

Technical Primer

Prior to the Speech Day (for students)

Check your device for the following:

  • Sufficient memory
  • Fully charged battery
  • Device settings: record a practice session to check for quality of audio/video
    • Practice downloading to your computer and uploading (also, some devices can upload straight to YouTube)
    • Check for quality
  • Set your device to a lower video quality, not HD! This will make uploading your file speedier.
    • Remember, we need to see and hear you clearly.
  • It's also advised that you use a device with an easy-to-navigate zoom function
  • If you use a cell phone, place on "airplane" or similar mode so phone calls/texts don't interrupt the recording session.

During the Speech Session

  • Clearly describe to the videographer how to operate your device, including:
    • Zoom in/out
    • How to know you’re being recorded
    • How to save

After the Speech

  • Save your recording and share with your instructor ASAP (see below)
    • Keep a copy of the recording (just in case the file upload is not immediately successful)
  • Do not edit the recording in any way
    • The length of your actual speech, not the video, will be considered.

Uploading your Speech to Canvas (for students)

Speech Upload Instructions

Go to YouTube or Vimeo and upload your speech as an unlisted video.

Open a YouTube account (you may use one you already have, and if you have a gmail or SJSU email account you already have one). This is a simple process, like signing up for an email account.

Set the video as "unlisted" (Do not set as private! If the video is set to Private, you'll see a section to enter YouTube usernames or email addresses of people that will have access to your private videos. In order to watch a private video, your contacts must already have a YouTube account.)
