Late/Missed Assignment Policy

Late/Missed Assignment Policy

Assignments are considered late once the due date/time has past. Students who miss assignments due to legitimate excuses for unplanned/unscheduled events such as illness, emergencies, or sudden changes in work schedule must submit the form below to the instructor within 5 days to request permission to make-up these assignments. If approved, students must make-up the missed assignments within the specific time frame proscribed by the instructor.

Beat the Clock

I do not close assignments (with the exception of discussion boards and quizzes). Instead, work submitted after the deadline will receive a five minute grace period after which each minute an assignment is late will cost one point. Once the value of the assignment has been exhausted the submission will not be graded (with the exception of the main project phases which will get instructor feedback, but no points). For example, a 20 point assignment that is 10 minutes late will lose five points.

Students with regular or planned activities due to sanctioned campus activities, work, family issues, deployment, or other unavoidable occurrences that take you away from regular computer or internet access need to contact the instructor immediately, explain the situation, and (if accepted as valid) come to an understanding on the best course of action. Any alternative assignments or submissions for missed class sessions with graded assignments or activities must be turned in PRIOR to the deadline or day missed to earn credit.

Important Note for Athletes

Each team provides its members with paperwork that should be submitted to instructors at the beginning of the semester that has game schedules or dates for required activities. It is the responsibility of student athletes to turn in this material and to submit any required assignments PRIOR the due date providing that is when the trip will occur. For unexpected or unscheduled events (eg. championships) paperwork must be submitted prior to the event.

In the event you are on the road and promised internet access is unavailable or reliable use your phone to email me ASAP.

Bottom line, I will not accept late work for planned events.

Directions

If you have unplanned/unscheduled life events that interfere with your ability to meet course deadlines please contact me immediately. I understand if you wish to talk to me in-person, but do not delay notifying me to arrange a meeting.

You have two options.

Option #1: briefly explain to me what happened. Please do not simply submit this form with a vague description such as “family problems.” For example, “I had a death in the family” is sufficient. Do not assume I will or won't accept any given excuse, it is always better to ask. I most cases I won't require documentation - we are adults and I trust you.

Option #2:  if the issue is sensitive and you do not feel comfortable discussing it with me you may go to Counseling Services, Administration Building, Room 201 (408-924-5910) < http://www.sjsu.edu/counseling/Personal_Counseling/index.htm Links to an external site.> and explain your situation to them and they will contact me with a recommendation.

If you choose Option #2, still send me an email simply stating you are choosing this option so I know this is in process and what assignments are involved.

If you choose Option #1, please copy and paste the form below (between ***) and submit to the course email address. You must submit this form to the instructor within 5 days to request permission to make-up these assignments. I will verify I received it and will return this form later with instructions on the new assignment due date. Also include it when you return your late assignment. PLEASE be concise.
