Methods
I collected data by conducting a focus group, interviews, and online surveys. In order to be qualified for each research method, participants needed to meet the following requirements: check Twitter daily, be an frequent user of Twitter (i.e. tweet, re-tweet, and favorite/like tweets), and be at least 18 years old. Each of the previous methods was piloted on my roommates and classmates. Scheduling was my biggest challenge. I overcame this challenge by creating a GroupMe group chat (it is an app) for those people who were interested in participating. This was especially helpful because it gives us access to a calendar, which allows me to send them reminders directly to their cell phones.
Research Question
RQ: How and why do people use Twitter? According to my data Twitter allows users to keep in connect with others, such as old friends, family members, celebrities and politicians.
Hypothesis
I correctly hypothesized that people primarily use Twitter to create a running narration of their lives for their friends and family’s consumption. My data shows that users Tweet/post randomly the majority of the time.
Brief Summary Statement
People primarily use Twitter to as a running narration for their friends and family’s consumption. Twitter users enjoy the freedom to tweet/rant as opposed to Facebook where there is the “unwritten rule” of one post per day. To conclude, Twitter is a platform that allows users the chance to express themselves throughout the day
