How do people manage their co-worker relations on Facebook?
Methods
My data collection process included online survey, a focus group and interviews. In order to be eligible for each research method, participants must be over 18 years old, and are currently employed or have at least one-year working experience. These methods were piloted with peers and friends. There were some challenges in recruiting suitable participants and arranging time for interviews and the focus group during conducting research methods, and I overcame it by seeking helps from my friends and relatives on Facebook, and classmates through Canvas site.
Research Question
My research question is: How do people manage their co-worker relations on Facebook? My data revealed that people were cautious in interacting with co-workers on Facebook. All of them agreed that the workplace friendship was the most important factor affecting their decisions to friend co-workers on Facebook. The data showed that the most common strategy to manage co-worker relations on Facebook is setting up privacy for online posts related to works on this site.
Hypothesis
I correctly hypothesized that people will have different strategies to manage their co-worker relations. These strategies protect their privacy and make them feel safer when using Facebook to interact others.
Brief Summary Statement
Overall, people are cautious towards friending co-workers on Facebook, so they have different strategies to manage their co-worker relations on this site, such as setting up privacy for online posts related to their work; although, these relationships are built based on the friendship that already existed.
