Peer Review Rubric - Essay 5 First Draft

For essay 5 first draft, you will be randomly and automatically assigned a peer review by 5:30pm on April 21. Below is the rubric that needs to be completed as comments on your peer reviewer's draft. I want to be able to see everything marked on the actual draft. Don't put all of your comments in the box on the side.

Go through each criteria and mark the draft. Add additional comments within the draft to help your colleague.

Peer Review is due Sunday, April 24, by 10am. At that point, I will begin reviewing those drafts. I cannot review and comment upon a draft until your peer review partner has completed his/her comments.

STRIKE THROUGH ANY USE OF:

  1. First person: I, me, our, we, us, my, etc.
  2. Third person: You
  3. Find rhetorical questions

Rubric #1- First Pass

  1. Title: Does the author offer an interesting title that intrigues the reader to read further? If not, make a suggestion.
  2. Read 1st + Last Paragraph only
    • Look for context -- is it contained in the first paragraph prior to the thesis statement? Why is the author focusing on a particular issue. Is there a singular issue at stake in this first paragraph? If not, help the author narrow the focus (e.g., the editorial cannot be about "racism" in general; the editorial needs to take its cue from one of the assigned essays and debate that idea or that hot issue in a more focused manner)
    • Look at syntax + connections -- is the word selection appropriate in both of these paragraphs?
    • Look at thesis -- is it narrow enough to be discussed in 750 words? is it clear? does it avoid the listing feature?
    • Will the last paragraph make a better intro?
  3. Read only topic sentences of each Paragraph
    • Does the topic sentence present an argument or only info? Make recommendations for expanding the argument with each topic sentence
    • Does each topic sentence develop the argument or only restate?  Make suggestions for revisions.
    • Does the final sentence of each paragraph make a better topic sentence?

Rubric #2 – Second Pass

  1. Highlight/ underline any use of passive voice- is, was, were, are, been, am, etc.
  2. Indicate where active voice is used (highlight or underline)
  3. Highlight + comment where there are 3 sources
    • Is the author + source included? Help with revisions.
    • Is in-text citation used correctly? Help with revisions.
    • Are quotes used? Is there a section where a quote could be used? any place that you question the authority of the author?
    • Is a signal phrase used? Help with revisions.
    • Is the quote explained? Help with revisions.
  4. Works Cited? Help with revisions.
