Summary:

• Rolling synchronizes rotation and motion.
• A rolling wheel travels slightly more than three diameters with each cycle (turn) of the wheel.
• If the rotation is not synchronized with the motion then instead of rolling we have sliding motion with slipping (free spinning).
• The speed of the motion is set by the radius of the wheel and the rotation rate (frequency).
• The “wagon wheel illusion” of reverse rotation occurs when the rotation rate is high and it’s an example of the Nyquist effect.
