Building Rapport with Students-2

Another aspect of instructor presence is being able to connect with your students, or rapport-building. Building rapport with your students is essential to helping them stay connected with the online class, motivate them to complete their work, and feel comfortable coming to you when they need help in their learning.

Several of the techniques for establishing instructor presence can also work for connecting with your students and to help humanize your online course so students feel more comfortable and invested in their learning process. Some of those strategies, plus a few additional ones, include:

  • Make sure to introduce yourself to the class. An audio or video introduction provides an additional way for students to "meet" their instructor.
  • Use an "Introductions" type activity in the class and make sure to respond personally to each of your students.
  • Be personable to your students, making sure to use their first names in your communications with them and adopting a more friendly, caring tone.
  • Facilitate discussions by asking questions and showing students that you are connected to their learning.
  • Establish a communication plan for your students with specific ways that they can get in touch with you.
  • Be adaptable in your facilitation, as each student in your course is different and is coming with their own specific skillset
  • Manage your expectations and recognize that the level of rapport you have with your classes will vary.
  • Pay attention to the equity issues and potential minefield associated with teaching techniques in Zoom.  Equity Concerns in Zoom – CTE Resources (bc.edu) Links to an external site.
