What you need to complete in order to register for classes
University, College, Major, & Department requirements
Undoubtedly, you are getting emails and multiple invitations to Canvas courses. It can be overwhelming, but on the bright side, you have a bountiful amount of support from different areas throughout the university.
San Jose State University is one LARGE institution with multiple colleges and service departments. You are in the College of Engineering. This is where the Engineering Student Success Center along with all the engineering majors reside (i.e. Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering).
Each email or message in MySJSU you are receiving from now until orientation is likely related to registering for courses on day 2 of Sparta Camp. Below is a quick summary of each action item you MUST complete in order to register for classes.
1. Early Start (University requirement for some students)
- Some students are required to take an Early Start Links to an external site. course in English or Math in their FIRST summer or fall semester at SJSU
- Students who don't complete this requirement will be subject to disenrollment from SJSU
- It is possible to meet the requirement by completing the PPA or sending in SAT, ACT, or proof of completed coursework from an accredited college.

2. Participate in our discussion boards (Engineering Student Success Center requirement)
- Before we open all the modules, please use the discussion boards to ask questions and connect with other students!

3. Schedule and Take the PPA (College of Engineering requirement)
- Please view the slide deck called "Math and English Requirements for students in the College of Engineering"
- Make sure to log in to your single sign on account so you can access all links
- Important "to do" item: Take the PPA Links to an external site. if you took precalculus, trigonometry, or calculus, but you did not take the AP or other exam. The PPA must be scheduled in advance and is an in person exam.
4. New Family & Student Programs (University requirement)

5. Reflections on College Writing (University requirement)

- Canvas course: Reflections on College writing (RCW)
- Important "to do" item to complete in order to register for ENGL 1A: receive a 10 on each assignment in the RCW
- This MUST be completed by the RCW deadlines. You will not be allowed to register for ENGL 1A without completing and receiving your scores on all assignments
- If you have test scores that fulfill your ENGL 1A requirement, then you do not need to complete the RCW
6. Complete this orientation course (Engineering Student Success Center requirement)
- One week before your orientation, you will get access to exercises and content to prepare you for orientation day. In our experience, students who complete the assignments have an edge on registering during orientation. Thus, they are more likely to get the section they want
