Successfully Recording and Sharing your Speech
Prior to the Speech Day
Check your device for the following:
- Sufficient memory
- Fully charged battery
- Device settings: record a practice session to check for quality of audio/video
- Practice downloading to your computer and uploading (also, some devices can upload straight to YouTube)
- Check for quality
- Set your device to a lower video quality, not HD! This will make uploading your file speedier.
- Remember, we need to see and hear you clearly.
- It's also advised that you use a device with an easy-to-navigate zoom function
- If you use a cell phone, place on "airplane" or similar mode so phone calls/texts don't interrupt the recording session.
During the Speech Session
- Clearly describe to the videographer how to operate your device, including:
- Zoom in/out
- How to know you’re being recorded
- How to save
After the Speech
- Save your recording and share with your instructor ASAP (see below)
- Keep a copy of the recording (just in case the file upload is not immediately successful)
- Do not edit the recording in any way
- The length of your actual speech, not the video, will be considered.
Sharing The Recording With Your Instructor (2 options)
Option 1: Sharing using a file upload through Canvas (or: How do I add media to my Assignment?)
1. Add media to the assignment by clicking on the Submit Assignment button.
2. You can upload audio [1] or video [2] files to your assignment. The process is the same for both.
- You may also follow this link to the Canvas Guide: http://guides.instructure.com/s/2204/m/4152/l/48622-how-do-i-upload-a-video-using-the-rich-content-editor
Option 2: Sharing with YouTube
- Open a YouTube Links to an external site. account (you may use one you already have, and if you have a gmail or SJSU email account you already have one). This is a simple process, like signing up for an email account.
- Upload your video:
3. Set the video as "unlisted" if you only want your video viewable for people with the link (Do not set as private! Even if you share the link to a private video it won’t be viewable for your instructor)
4. Navigate back to the assignment in Canvas and select the “Submit Assignment” button. Copy and paste the link to your YouTube video into “Website URL”:
Finally, do a quick double-check that your video is submitted and viewable. DO NOT delete your copy of the recording.
