Introduction

My e-portfolio is not only a reflective examination and compilation of the coursework I completed during my pursuit of the MLIS degree at SJSU, but it also serves as a culmination of my learning experience while working toward said degree. While this journey in all honesty has been both overwhelming and demanding at times, it has also been well worth every effort I put forth and has been an enlightening experience that will serve me in the future.

The process I went through to complete this e-portfolio involved the following steps: the syllabi from all courses was re-read; the MLIS Course Descriptions were examined; the Statements of Competency Rubrics were read; a systematic search was done of my files to gather research; selection made of essential evidence to validate the competencies; and then came the actual writing.

The organization of my e-portfolio allows for easy access to the completed work through its adherence to the Statements of Competency Rubrics and the use of the Canvas e-portfolio platform. As expected, the introduction page provides readers with an overview of the project’s contents, serving as a road map of sorts. After the introduction page, the e-portfolio is arranged as follows:

  • Competencies…Each competency, from A-O, is formatted by using levels of headings which are the following: Introduction, Explication, Evidence, Conclusion, and References. These remain consistent throughout the main work, thus, allowing for ease of movement from one competency to another, such as A to D, and provides the ability to perceive possible connections between them.
  • Evidence Description…In this section of my e-portfolio, I explain the supporting relationship between selected evidence and each competency, providing the “why” of the chosen evidence. In addition, the “how” of the incorporated evidence explains and illustrates my gains in knowledge, skills, and competency in each of the areas addressed.
  • Conclusion…The knowledge and skills I gained from the coursework taken and the completion of my e-portfolio, will definitely be used, not only in my current position at a public library, but also in any future endeavors I make as an information professional.
  • References…My e-portfolio provides a list of all references cited in the competency, using APA style format.

The e-portfolio experience for me, although at times quite arduous, has been quite rewarding. The task of fulfilling the competencies, required me to revisit coursework from previous semesters; thus, reminding me of the wealth of knowledge I have accumulated over the course of my time at SJSU. For me, the e-portfolio process has provided me the chance to compile all my learning into a comprehensive collection. The e-portfolio can also be seen as an opportunity to demonstrate a vast array of skills to future employers.
