Equitable and Inclusive Teaching-2
Inclusive pedagogy is the concept of creating an inclusive space for ALL students, by embracing diversity (ability, gender, race, religion, sexuality, etc.) as an asset. Inclusive pedagogy is both learner-centered and equity-focused, ultimately creating a learning environment in which all students feel equally valued and included.
Promoting an equitable and inclusive teaching approach is an important component in order to establish a positive learning environment while also encouraging student development. But creating this type of learning environment can be a challenge in any type of learning modality. In this section, you will be provided with some resources and teaching strategies to help address how you approach equity and inclusion in the classroom, regardless of modality.
The Columbia University Center for Teaching and Learning has developed a set of guiding principles to help their instructors better structure their intentional approaches to inclusive and equitable teaching. The principles* (provided below) are a good starting point for ensuring an inclusive pedagogy in your teaching.
- Principle 1: Establish and support a class climate that fosters belonging for all students
- Principle 2: Set explicit student expectations
- Principle 3: Select course content that recognizes diversity and acknowledges barriers to inclusion
- Principle 4: Design all course elements for accessibility
- Principle 5: Reflect on YOUR beliefs about teaching to maximize self-awareness and commitment to inclusion
*More detailed descriptions and examples of each principle can be found in the Guide for Inclusive Teaching at Columbia Links to an external site..
