Strategies for Equity & Inclusion-2

The following are some strategies that you can employ to ensure an effective, equitable and inclusive teaching approach:

  • Address diversity in your course design by including a diversity statement in your syllabus
  • Include a land acknowledgement in your slide decks and have it available for students to read before each class begins
  • Check all course documents/materials for accessibility
  • Structure your course to ensure adequate support is available to students
  • Consider various types of teaching and learning frameworks to approach structuring your course and select a design that best serves the student population, including Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles
  • Be aware of your own explicit biases and work towards minimizing negative impacts with your student interactions
  • Be aware of various racial and socioeconomic factors in your class and how it might affect the environment
  • Incorporate diverse perspectives into the course content, making sure to offer diverse ethnic and racial perspectives into your readings and resources
  • Work towards creating an inclusive climate in the classroom, making sure students feel valued because of differences and are comfortable participating in the class
