  • Points 10
  • Submitting a text entry box or a file upload
  • Available Sep 21, 2021 at 12am - Sep 23, 2021 at 11:59am
This assignment was locked Sep 23, 2021 at 11:59am.

READ ALL THE INSTRUCTIONS PRIOR TO WORKING ON THIS ASSIGNMENT.  FAILURE TO FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS PRECISELY WILL RESULT IN A LOWER GRADE OR NO GRADE.

And, it reduces the number of emails I will get asking questions that are answered here.

Please upgrade your submission to 18 pt. type font prior to submitting this. I frequently grade them on my phone and the larger type font makes it sooooo much easier.

Please create a single submission which answers all the questions noted below in a single document.  Ten in the first part, 3 in the last section.  I expect personal and unique answers from each student, not a group effort.  You only need to submit one to three lines per question.  Please do not repeat the questions in your document, simply answer by number, i.e. 1. It will be subjected to plagiarism testing upon submission, copying over the questions and/or repeated answers from different students will be flagged.

Minimum 200 words.  18 pt. type font.

–Write it on Criterion, the access code is found on Canvas, in Modules
–Achieve 5/6 or Proficient or better.  If you don't see a number score scroll down and look for a, "Proficient" score.
–Take a screen shot of your Criterion Score and post that as the first thing on this assignment, the screen shot needs to be wide enough to view the score, your name in the upper right and the assignment name near the middle.  Don't crop it down, just shrink it leaving the entire screen view available.  If needed change your screen zoom level before taking the screen shot so everything I need to see is visible.  The screen shot may take a while to load onto Canvas, be patient.  I need to see that screen shot so work it out so it's visible at the top of your submission.
-Sometimes you need to create a word.doc file set up correctly, save that and do a file upload rather than a copy and paste.
-Sometimes a screen shot won't load and you may need to take a picture of your Criterion score with a camera or phone and send that to your Word.doc file.  It's a different format and may load better.
-If you use an Apple, I don't know how to help you.
-Check with SJSU or Canvas or Criterion tech support if you have problems.
–No screen shot, including your name and the assignment name = no points
–Then, the word count
–Paste or upload your written work after the screen shot of your Criterion score and the word count

Watch the video, and then discuss it in small discussion groups.

Then complete this writing submission by the due date.

 CONTENT QUESTIONS FROM THE VIDEO

 1.   What were the real names of the people involved?  Explain what happened to the family, from the time of the accident to the time that this video was produced. (This story is told in segments throughout the video.)

2.   What is the basic position of Dr. John Money?  Why did he do what he did in the twin’s case?  What is meant by “gender neutrality”?

3.   What is the position of Dr. Milton Diamond?  What role did he play in the twins case?  What does he believe causes gender identity?  (May need to look this one up, Wiki, Google, etc., he does not appear in the video)

4.   What have various studies on the use of testosterone and the brains of rats, “normal” men and women, and transsexuals shown?  (They occur throughout the video, or do some searching)

THOUGHT AND DISCUSSION QUESTIONS FROM THE VIDEO AND READINGS

 1.   Give a basic summary of what the video showed and your immediate reaction to it.  Compare your reaction to that of some other students in this class.

2.   How should the outcome of this one case affect standard medical practice, including the treatment of intersex babies?  Can we learn a significant lesson from a single case?

3.   What would you do if a similar accident happened to your baby boy?

4.   What are the implications of the John/Joan case for ever achieving a society with sexual equality, or of creating Kate Bornstein’s vision of a “no-gender” world (again, you may have to do some outside research)?

5.   What are the roles of nature and of nurture in the development of our gender roles?  Why should we care?
