Spend some time reflecting on the recording of your speech (and later, in your second reflection paper, compare each speech to each other), and then write a 500-600 word evaluation of your presentation (in paragraph form).
What were the specific strengths you believe you demonstrated? What were specific areas of weakness that you believe diminished the effectiveness of the presentation? Remember, it is NOT sufficient to focus your evaluation entirely on the negatives or solely on delivery. Also, cite specific observations from your recording. If you get stuck, you might find it useful to consider the following questions:
Preparation:
- What did you do to prepare for this speech?
- What might you have done (or will you try to do for the next speech) differently in order for a more effective speech?
Introduction:
- How effective was your attention-getting strategy?
- How effective were you at establishing credibility?
- How effectively did you try to relate this topic to your audience?
Body/content:
- Although you were familiar with the content of your speech, your audience was only exposed to it for five to eight minutes or so. Were you clear in your theme?
- How would you revise your speech so that you could improve it?
- What can you say about the organization of your speech?
- Were your ideas developed thoroughly?
- You might even consider looking at your strongest (or your weakest) transition and stating why you think it was effective (or ineffective).
- Did you address the specific areas of focus for this particular speech?
Conclusion:
- Did you clearly summarize key points from your speech?
- Did you leave your audience with a lasting impression?
Delivery:
- What were your strengths?
- What do you need to improve?
- Did your delivery fit the mood of the speech?
- How effectively did you utilize the presentation aid?
- Did you use utilize effective vocal and physical delivery?
