Major Speech 1: Demo.
Purpose of Assignment:
The primary purpose of demonstration speaking is to help clarify a complex process, idea or event for your audience. In other words, you are to demonstrate (or teach us) how to do something; what you choose to demonstrate can be as simple or as complicated as you like, however: (1) it should speak to issues of social, community or cultural relevance, and (2) it should be something that your audience will find meaningful (i.e., something they might actually be able to do or want to do upon hearing your speech). In other words, you should teach your audience how to do something that will help them better engage in their community, that will help them make a positive difference, or that will help them develop a clearer understanding of the diverse cultures that comprise their community. Keep in mind that effective use of visual aids will likely help your audience better understand and learn what you choose to demonstrate. Your grade will be based on the following:
Speech:
- Your topic should be socially significant, informative and challenging to this audience.
- The speech should be approximately 5 minutes (if outside 4:30-5:30 minutes, there will be a 10% grade reduction).
- The introduction and conclusion should be fully developed.
- There should be a definite, logical connective/transition bridging each component of the speech.
- Each main point should be clearly stated and developed.
- Use at least one visual aid according to the guidelines presented in the text.
- Adhere to the principles of clear explanation. Use organizers (signposts, enumeration, acronyms, slogans), emphasis cues, and figurative analogies. Also use definitions where appropriate.
- Be prepared to answer questions from the audience after the conclusion of your speech.
- Your presentation skills should include:
- Natural and conversational delivery
- Extemporaneous mode using notecards
- Effective vocal and physical delivery skills
- Effective use of visual aids
