Major Speech 2: Inform.
Purpose of Assignment:
The primary purpose of informative speaking is to ensure the audience's clear understanding of the ideas or issues you share with them. The purpose of this speech is to present a clear explanation of complex material to the audience. In other words, your task is to explain something that requires a human to explain it. Your topic should be socially significant, intellectually challenging, informative and interesting to your audience; you should make it clear to your audience that they must listen, that they (their families, their communities) will be better for learning the complexities of your topic.
Speech:
- Your topic should be socially significant, informative and challenging to this audience.
- The speech should be 4:30 to 5:30 minutes in length (if outside 4:30 to 5:30 minutes, there will be a 10% grade reduction).
- The introduction and conclusion should be fully developed—that is, they should include the three clearly identifiable parts.
- Be prepared to answer questions from the audience after the conclusion of your speech.
- Your presentation skills should include:
- Natural and conversational delivery using notecards (i.e., you may not read from your notecards)
- Effective vocal and physical delivery skills
- Effective use of visual aids
Speech Organization:
- There should be a definite, logical connective/transition bridging each component of the speech.
- Each main point should be clearly stated and developed.
- Adhere to the principles of clear explanation. Use organizers (signposts, enumeration, acronyms, slogans), emphasis cues, analogies, and repetition.
Speech Development:
- Use at least three different types of supporting materials (i.e., examples, testimony, statistics, explanation, definition).
- Use at least three different types of audience-centered language techniques (see chapter 10) (i.e., storytelling, listener self-interest, humor, involvement, movement, reality, novelty).
- Cite at least four sources in your speech.
