Welcome! Thank you for enrolling in COMM 144F, Organizational Communication, Summer 2013. This is the 4th time I've taught this course in the summer session; the 13th time if you count the times I taught it as a 3-unit course. The timeframe is compressed, but doable.

I co-chaired the committee that chose Canvas over three other options (Blackboard, Desire2Learn, and Moodle). From the first demo I saw of Canvas in action to constructing this class, I've found Canvas user-friendly, intuitive, and fun. I hope you have a similar experience. I've been teaching online since 1999 and Canvas is by far the best learning platform I've encountered.

Here's how I've organized this website:

  • Announcements / Regular info about what's happening in the class, such as assignment due dates.
  • Syllabus / An overview of course policies and objectives. Plus a calendar at the bottom of the page.
  • Discussions / We'll have three class discussions. We'll also use discussion for posting and commenting on the case study analyses you write up.
  • Quizzes / 5 quizzes; you may take each one twice. I've set up each quiz so that it draws from a pool of questions. On your second attempt, you'll get a new set of questions, although some specific questions may be the same.
  • Pages / Info about the class, such as this Welcome page.
  • Files / All the files I've uploaded for the class, such as the quiz study guides.
  • Modules / I've  grouped the class assignments by week.
  • Conferences / Use if you want to meet in real time with me or other classmates.
  • Collaborations / Use if you want to work with someone in the class.
  • People / Everyone in this class.
  • Grades / Keep track of your grades.
  • Settings / Go here to set up your Notifications for the class.

If you're new to Canvas, don't worry, it's easy to use. If you're not, don't hesitate to provide tips and advice to help out us novice users! Also, Canvas's Help function really is helpful. So go there first when you have a technical question.
