Detailed Discussion Requirements

I design discussions to facilitate conversations among class members. You'll post four quotation messages in the class discussions with each of those message at least 12 hours apart. I require that you post your messages at these minimal intervals to encourage you to engage in the class at multiple time points during the week, rather than just logging on once and trying to complete all your discussion in one day. If quotation messages for a particular discussion are less than 12 hours apart, you will not earn any credit for the later messages.

Follow these requirements for participating in class discussions:

To receive participation credit for a particular discussion, you must participate in the specified time period. The schedule on the Syllabus page lists each specific discussion time frame.

  • To earn participation points, you must participate in the appropriate discussion area, contributing at least eight messages. Each week is worth 100 points, so each quotation message is worth 15 points and each comment message is worth 10 points.
  • In your quotation messages you must address concepts and ideas in the chapters under discussion. Each quotation message must be at least 12 hours apart (no time restrictions on comment messages). Think of the discussions as conversations—be sure you relate what you say to what others have said, as well as integrating course concepts into your messages.
  • For the quotation messages, choose 1-3 sentences from the text for each quote that you find especially interesting and that highlight key concepts or ideas in a particular chapter. Here are some examples of quotes from Chapter 1:
    • "Three regions will dominate the global marketplace during the next few decades: The Pacific Rim (China, in particular), North America (Canada, especially), and the European Union (EU)" (pp. 8-9).
    • "People-based knowledge management assumes that organizational knowledge is comprised not of 'information,' but of networks of 'knowers' who transform data into knowledge by making it meaningful and sharing it with relevant others in a larger social context" (pp. 15-16).
    • "Since careers no longer follow predictable paths, personal connections and interpersonal relationships have become essential for success" (p. 20).
  • Format your quotation messages this way:

"Three regions will dominate the global marketplace during the next few decades: The Pacific Rim (China, in particular), North America (Canada, especially), and the European Union (EU)" (pp. 8-9).

Note: The discussion section of your quotation messages must be a minimum of 100 words.

  • Each quotation message must be at least 100 words in length (not including the quote).
  • Each comment message must be at least 75 words in length.
  • Although all of your messages in a particular week may reflect on what others have said (unless you are the first to post), four messages must comment on what at least four different participants have posted, referring to each person by name. This requirement encourages you to read messages from a broad range of people in the class.
  • Your messages must be visible in the appropriate discussion area. Just reply to my original discussion prompt when posting your quotation messages or reply to what your classmates have posted when you comment on their messages. Do not post your message as an attachment.
  • Of course, you may participate more than eight times in any discussion. However, you can't get extra credit for posting extra messages.
