In preparing to finish my degree, my research into Communication Studies bore out what I had experienced in my working life; employers value those who can write well, think critically, and maintain cooperative, constructive relationships with all sorts of work partners. These were all abilities I committed to developing during my college career at SJSU, and which I now plan to bring to the field of nonprofit grant writing.

One of the most memorable experiences I’ve had in my studies was my internship with the grant writing team of a local nonprofit. I learned that an effective proposal makes a clear connection between the organization's activities and expertise, and the funder's priorities. I had my first "win" when two local businesses responded to my request for in-kind donations for our annual fundraiser.

My working life has centered around libraries.  Most recently, I have run elementary school libraries, creating learning spaces that are welcoming and stimulating for hundreds of children.  Everyday, I have connected the needs of the students and teachers with what the library offers - my expertise and a collection managed with them in mind.

I am seeking a full-time Development Associate Position with a local nonprofit.   I will draw on my research, writing, editing, and organizational skills to find funding for important work.  A development department would benefit from the critical thinking skills I have developed in my coursework and while troubleshooting library operations as the sole staff person. I would be valuable to a nonprofit because I have personal insight into community concerns such as LGBT issues, autism, education, literacy, and homelessness. My personal journey brings me to a place where my life experience, honed skills, and social awareness can come together to make a difference.
