Creativity in the Work Place

I have had two simultaneous full time jobs throughout my adult life: one job being student, and the other being an employee. It has definitely been difficult balancing my time between making money and furthering my education. Lessons like creating a creative habit from Twyla Tharp has been both helpful and inspiring. I learned through taking CA 175 Seminar in Creative Process to set aside time and distractions to work on projects, and then I can engage in the creative state of flow. Knowing that people of all trades get distracted and have to separate themselves or create ways to eliminate temptation to procrastinate and get distracted was also inspiring, being that realizing it just doesn't happen to me! I have recently switched jobs from working as a cocktail waitress to working for a local newspaper/marketing company known as Metro newpapers. Upon my interview, they asked me many questions to do with experience and knoweldge of various things. I shared with them all I could about my work life and school life that I have had experience in. Once hired, my boss told me that he was impressed with the knowledge I had of "the big picture" and all the useful things I knew that were from my creative arts classes (like the Creative Process, Non-Profit, and Art in New Media) to name a few. It is the happy marriage of my life experiences to my earned knowledge through college that helped me get this job, that is potentially my first career that I have even before I am out of school. Although I haven't applied yet for "internship credit", I am learning many hands on training at this job, as well as embracing what I have learned through being a Creative Arts student and implementing my gained knowledge in the work place that sets me apart from the rest.
